Thinking in Collection

When students can think and identify quantities by naming collections they build imagery for number. Imagery underlies mental strategies. If we want our students to develop fluency we must work on imagery. Can you see 2s and 3s? What about 5s?

Thinking in Collection transfers to multiplication when we use cuisenaire rods. Students who have the rods as imagery can see facts put together as repeating units and can substitute those units for other units…. the distributive property is a number property our curriculum states in the outcomes. Do you understand it?
