1.) Pre K to Grade 3: ChunkitZ, Rods, Blocks or Dots: The most effective models for building Number Sense into Number Facts: presented in 2 or 3 parts series specific to grade levels where possible.
This workshop will provide participants with a common sense approach to developing a year long plan at each of the grade levels to support consistent attention to building the reasoning and remembering skills students must develop in order to build, maintain and transfer the ability to relate, remember and apply what we like to call “basic” addition and subtraction facts to numbers to 100.
In order to truly develop the fluency and recall that lead to “mastery” students need to practice thinking in “units” or collections.
ChunkitZ and Cuisenaire Rods link to bar models, long recognized within the literature to be one of the most effective models for moving learners from manipulatives to mental fluency.
Subtraction making you CRAZY…. find out why. And more important, how to teach so that every student can be successful. Materials package includes ready to use materials to get started tomorrow.
2.) Forget the HUNDRED CHART: GRIDS is the GAME if FLUENCY, EFFICIENCY and Automatic RECALL of FACTS is the GOAL
If our goal is fluency with calculations to 100 by the end of Grade 3, the journey demands that teachers have knowledge and experience with more than just their grade level, in order to understand the gaps and misconceptions that can block the learning.
