Cuisenaire Rods: Addition/Subtraction

Teach additive reasoning before addition facts. Cuisenaire rods can help students  focus on understanding as they build their memory skills. Recalling ‘facts’ is a skill we must teach.

They link to bar models & number lines which researchers can demonstrate to be the most effective tools for building memory, recall and application skills. Used well they display number in a measurement context and we know that context makes the learning ‘take’.

 

How do you teach subtraction? and is it working for all your students… ? Working with the rods will help you understand how to teach for number sense before number operations, why subtraction must be taught with, not after addition & how to decide when it is time to ‘just practice the facts.’

A key  component of my cuisenaire rod workshops: We use rods during the workshop so that participants build a deeper, richer understanding of how to teach equality, addition and subtraction facts BUT I also demonstrate other tools and techniques that build the same skills and understandings.  You do not need to purchase a whole class set of rods to get started. Whole class, small group or guided math center. You decide how to use the rods in your classroom.

How do you teach multiplication before you teach multiplication facts? and why does it matter?  Working with the rods will help you understand how number sense and number operations sense  both contribute to a lasting ability to recall and apply multiplication & division facts.  Participants will use the rods to engage in activities that build multiplicative reasoning as students create and relate multiplication & division facts. Key questions we will discuss: When is it time to move to “just memorizing” and critical components of the practice that makes if effective.
